This website started as a tiny spark of an idea in the brain of a busy grad student working on a project for a literature class. While working on that project, some alarming statistics came to light.
Did you know that less than 1% of books published include LGBTQ+ themes and/or characters?
Did you know that most of those books seem to be about young white men?
But the queer community is much bigger than 1% and much more diverse than just white men (though, of course, there’s a place for them, too!)
A lot of organizations are working to change these statistics, but they could use our help. We can make sure we are telling our librarians and bookstore owners what we need. We can make sure we are asking for the materials we want to see.
A Queerer Mirror is here to help. In these pages you will find reviews and lists of as many different LGBTQ+ books as I can find. Every week I’ll be reading like crazy and reviewing for you. So check back in often and when you see something that looks awesome, make sure you’re asking your librarian or local bookseller to get it on the shelf!
While you’re at it, I’d love to hear from you with any questions, comments, or concerns. Even better if you’d like to send a book recommendation for something you think should be included. Hit me up on the contact page and I’ll get back to you as fast as I can.
